You are a beloved bride of Christ, and you are worthy of your vocation.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the virtue of chastity as “...the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus the inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being” (CCC 2337). This work of integration is a long road for many, and often a painful one—especially given the particular vices of our age.

It’s easy to think a vocation to religious life, and the significance of being consecrated exclusively to Christ as His bride, would exempt a woman from facing struggles within her sexuality. Though we cannot deny the reality of vocational grace, we also cannot deny the reality of human brokenness. You are indeed His bride, Sister—but you are also human.

Sexual brokenness takes many forms: addiction to pornography, masturbation or other sexual compulsions, a loss of virginity outside the context of marriage, or promiscuous behaviors that can haunt a woman throughout her life. Whatever form your sexual brokenness takes—from your past or present—it is not too much, and you belong.

  • Magdala has identified a very important need

“I have read and am impressed with this curriculum—Magdala has identified a very important need. Consecrated religious women are such a blessing to the Church; it is not surprising that the Evil One attacks these women who strive to be love in the heart of the Church in this way. I am happy to endorse this curriculum and Magdala’s efforts.”

Archbishop Joseph Naumann, Archdiocese of Kansas City, Co-Chair of the Religious Alliance Against Pornography

  • A Gift to the Church

“In our present culture in which sexuality has been so distorted, there are few individuals who have not been negatively affected, especially young women. This most certainly includes young women who have been called by the Lord to a life of virginity in consecrated religious life. This supplemental material to the already helpful program offered by Magdala Ministries is a gift to the Church in helping these young women receive healing and embrace with greater freedom their identity as beloved daughters who are called to exclusive intimacy with the Lord as His brides.”

Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki, Bishop of Springfield in Illinois

  • a transformative environment

“Pornography, masturbation, and sex addiction are real problems–and not just for men. Even women with secure histories and supportive families can repeatedly fall into the trappings of sexual acting out. Casting aside any illusions that this battle with sexual temptation can be won through rugged individualism, Magdala Ministries provides a transformative environment of supportive accompaniment and other resources that can breathe new life into the women who wrestle with any or all of these issues. Highly recommended!

In tandem with our small group curriculum

This addendum to our small groups crafted specifically for women in religious life is meant to be used in tandem with our standard curriculum.

The supplement is meant to fill a void; to acknowledge with honesty the brokenness in your humanity, and honor the glory and joy inherent to your vocational calling. It’s a space where you can process through those areas of your heart, free of condemnation. This curriculum and supplement—and the group in which you work through it—are meant to remind you of a magnificent truth: Jesus does not want to do away with your humanity in His union with you. He wants to love it, receive it, and sanctify it—every part of it.

You are beautiful to Him, not because you are perfect, but because you are His.

The places of sexual brokenness in your story are the very places He wants to encounter you, love you, and heal you.
