A Prayer for Motherhood
Each one of us enters the Church as a unique, unrepeatable, beloved daughter of the Father.
We find our individuality through family and friends, growing into our role as sister.
As we journey into early adulthood and begin discerning our vocation, we become aware of our role as bride—manifested first through our union with Christ as Bridegroom, and then potentially with a spouse in marriage.
We then recognize our maternal hearts for all those God has gifted us, through mentorship, community, physical motherhood, and/or spiritual motherhood.
These relational identities can be beautiful fuel for our prayer, but they can have equally devastating effects if wounded through relationships, experiences, or shame.
If you’re struggling to see your motherhood in this season, I hope this prayer is a moment of encounter with the Lord; let Him speak His truth over you.

Come Holy Spirit; come Lord Jesus; come Heavenly Father.
I am a nurturing mother to all I meet.
I am a mother whom God has entrusted with His children.
I am the spiritual mother of those in my life—students, employees, nieces and nephews, and all who look up to me.
God, help me to see myself with Your eyes. Grant me the wisdom to see my soul as You see it.
In times of joy, help me rejoice in You. Mothers adore the gaze of their babies, as you adore our gazing upon You. When I see a blessing in my life, may You be the first Person I run to in thanksgiving.
In times of sorrow, help me seek Your consoling Heart. Mothers comfort so many, even in the midst of their own sadness or confusion—just as our Heavenly Mother, Mary, does for us. When things don’t go as I expect, may You be my safe space to process and emote.
In times of gratitude, help me thank You. You have given me all the good, beautiful, and lovely aspects of my life—you have entrusted me with the precious care of Your children. Help me to honor Your generous, merciful trust in me.
In times of frustration, help me to be open and honest with You. You have a plan far greater than my contemplation, and I am often confused about Your divine design. Help me to earnestly question Your plan with reverent curiosity, while obeying Your design for me and Your children.
Lord, I thank you for those I am mother to on Earth, and those I am mother to in Eternity. Give me the wisdom to see where my motherhood has been nourished and lived out, and where I feel removed or separated from my maternal gifts. Grant me healing for the areas that are wounded, and thanksgiving for the areas that are honored.
In all things, and in all times, help me to feel trusted by You as Father of all. May I grow closer to You every day of my life, through whatever triumphs, trials, falls, and victories I may encounter.
I am a beloved daughter; a treasured sister; a precious bride; a nurturing mother. Jesus, please speak into these places of my heart, especially the barren, aching, or dry areas.
Speak Your love and truth over me—I surrender myself fully to You.
Amen.
